Many times people don't know how to choose a provider, what kind of experience or training should they have? Based on the problems their having, what level of care do they need? The chart below is one way to understand the levels of care and the different providers that help at different levels of need. Let us help you. Behavioral Health Professionals differ in terms of years of formal education, requirements of certification and licensure, years of experience and investment in additional training, exposure, and supervision to treat particular problem presentations.

Bachelors level paraprofessionals - General education requirements. No license. May be certified in practice as life coach, case management or peer support.

Masters Level Clinicians (2-3 years Formal Training after Bachelors) - Can be licensed or unlicensed working under supervision

Doctoral level clinicians (4-7 years Formal Training) - Must be licensed to practice clinically.

NP, DNP (2 years Formal Training) - Must be licensed to practice.

MD (6-8 years Formal Training) - Must be licensed to practice.
